Fasteners: how to join wood and structures securely

fasteners wood strong joints angle brackets accessories zrubko

When building, installing or renovating wooden elements, the result depends not only on the quality of the wood itself but also on choosing the right fasteners. A strong connection between the individual parts is the basis of stability. And also of the safety and long service life of every timber structure.

At Zrubko.sk you will find a wide range of fasteners and timber engineering connectors for professional and DIY projects. Available are wood screws, construction screws, decking and facade screws, connectors for timber-frame buildings, angle brackets, wood connectors, post supports, joist hangers and installation accessories.

In this article we look at the fasteners you can get from us and at how to choose the most suitable ones for your project.

Fasteners for wood projects, whatever you are building

Fasteners can be used when building decks, wooden facades, floors, pergolas, canopies, roof trusses, gazebos and timber-frame buildings, as well as when installing smaller wooden elements.

Our range mainly includes:

  • wood screws and construction screws, building screws
  • facade screws and decking screws,
  • frame anchors,
  • wood connectors,
  • and much more

When choosing, consider not only the length and diameter of the screw but also the head type, thread type, material, surface treatment and the environment in which the joint will be used.

Wood screws and construction screws

Wood screws are among the most frequently used fasteners for installing wooden elements. You will use them to join boards, timbers, cladding, flooring elements and timber structures, as well as for various repairs and finishing work. In our range you will find the top Swedish brand ESSVE.

Construction screws are designed for firmly joining load-bearing and heavier wooden elements. They are suitable for work with KVH structural timber beams, beams, rafters, purlins, wooden posts and other structural elements.

Various diameters and lengths are available, from shorter screws for installing smaller components to longer construction screws suitable for joining thicker wooden elements. You can choose screws with a partial or full thread, with various head types and with a recess suitable for installation with TX bits.

For larger timber joints it is important to choose the right length so that the screw creates a sufficiently strong connection but does not damage the wood or protrude on an unwanted side of the structure.

Decking, facade and floor screws

Every type of timber structure has its specifics. Different requirements apply when installing decking boards, wood cladding and flooring elements.

Decking screws

Decking screws are designed for fixing decking boards to a wooden or other load-bearing substructure. When choosing them, consider the wood species, the thickness of the decking board, the installation method and exposure to moisture or temperature changes.

For outdoor use, a durable surface treatment or a stainless steel version is important. Such screws help create a strong joint and at the same time reduce the risk of corrosion during long-term outdoor use.

Facade screws

Facade screws are suitable for fixing wood cladding and facade boards. With visible fixing it is important that the screw does not spoil the look of the cladding and at the same time holds the individual boards securely on the substrate.

They are used when installing wooden facades, cladding, ventilated facade systems and other outdoor wooden elements.

Floor screws

Floor screws are designed for installing wood flooring and floorboards. Their shape and the way they countersink help achieve firm fixing without unnecessary damage to the wood surface.

When choosing, consider the board thickness, the type of substrate and whether the fixing should be visible or concealed.

Timber engineering connectors for timber-frame buildings

For larger timber structures you cannot do without suitable timber engineering connectors. They help create strong and stable joints between beams, timbers, posts, rafters and other structural elements.

Our range includes:

  • timber engineering connectors,
  • straps,
  • post supports,
  • ridge ties,
  • joist hangers,
  • nail plates,
  • angle brackets,

You will use timber engineering connectors when building pergolas, gazebos, canopies, roof trusses, timber houses and garden buildings, as well as when reinforcing existing structures.

Angle brackets, connectors and post supports

Angle brackets are used to reinforce right-angle joints and to join wooden elements in various directions. They are used when installing timbers, boards, posts, frames and other structural parts.

Wood connectors help create stable joints between individual elements. Available are universal connectors in various sizes, left and right versions, as well as connectors designed for specific types of timber structures.

Post supports are suitable for anchoring wooden posts to concrete or another solid substrate. You will use them for pergolas, canopies, gazebos, fences and other structures where the wood needs to be kept off the substrate and given a stable base.

Material and surface treatment

Fasteners can be made of different materials and with different surface treatments. The right choice depends on whether the joint will be used indoors, in a sheltered outdoor area or in an environment with high humidity.

Our range includes, for example, electro zinc plated fasteners, yellow zinc, hot-dip galvanised (HDG) connectors, the more resistant CorrSeal surface treatment, stainless steel A2, stainless steel A4, a phosphated surface treatment and a lacquered version.

For indoor use or a sheltered environment, an electro zinc plated version may be suitable. For outdoor structures it is important to choose fasteners that resist moisture and weathering. We at Zrubko will be happy to advise you.

In more demanding conditions, for example on decks, wooden facades, structures near water or when using more aggressive wood species, a stainless steel version A2 or A4 may be the better choice.

Hot-dip galvanised timber engineering connectors are intended for outdoor use and for timber structures exposed to changing weather conditions.

How to choose the right fasteners

When choosing fasteners, first determine what you will be joining and in what environment the joint will be located.

Consider in particular:

  • whether you are joining wood to wood, wood to a connector or wood to concrete,
  • the thickness and type of the materials being joined,
  • the load-bearing capacity and stress on the joint,
  • indoor or outdoor use,
  • exposure to moisture and weather conditions,
  • the required corrosion resistance,
  • the diameter and length of the screw,
  • the head and recess type,
  • the installation method,
  • the number of pieces needed for the whole project.

To join wood to wood, wood screws, construction screws or carpentry screws are used. When joining wood to metal connectors, you need to choose screws compatible with the specific type of angle bracket, connector, post support or hanger.

When anchoring posts and timber structures to concrete, you need to choose a suitable anchoring solution according to the type of substrate and the expected load.

Fasteners for decks, facades and roof trusses

Whether you are planning to install a wooden deck, cladding, a floor, a pergola, a gazebo, a roof truss or a larger timber-frame building, correctly chosen fasteners are the basis of a strong and long-lasting result.

In one place you can choose wood screws, decking and facade screws, construction screws, angle brackets, post supports, hangers, connectors, bracing straps and other timber engineering connectors. The individual elements can be combined according to the specific type of structure and installation method.

For outdoor wood projects we also recommend thinking about protecting the wood afterwards. Suitable wood oils and woodstains help protect the surface from moisture, UV radiation and normal wear.
