Hidden fixing of decking boards with the HDS system

The latest trend: hidden fixing of decking boards

For many years, decking boards were traditionally screwed down from above through the face of the board. The screws stayed in plain sight, and unsightly splinters formed around the heads – a hazard for anyone walking barefoot on the deck. New methods of hidden fixing give you a surface without visible screws or dangerous splinters.

What is hidden fixing?

Hidden fixing is a method of installing decking boards in which the screw is driven at an angle of approximately 45° into the side edge of the board. The result is a deck without visible screws.

Hidden fixing with the Hidden Decking System (HDS)

HDS is a complete system for hidden fixing of decking boards. It consists of an installation tool, HDS screws in stainless steel A2 or A4, which are also suitable for aggressive environments, and special bits.

Installing boards with the HDS system is very easy. After a few attempts you will get the hang of it and the work will go quickly and smoothly.

Frequently asked questions about hidden fixing with the HDS system

What do I need to install decking boards with the HDS system?

To fix decking boards with the HDS hidden fixing system you need:

  • HDS installation tool – supplied with two HDS bits
  • HDS decking screws – in stainless steel A2 or A4
  • Special HDS bits – for large decks we recommend buying extra HDS bits

What are the black steel plates supplied with the HDS tool for?

The HDS tool pack contains 3 black steel plates that are used to achieve the required gap between the boards.

What width of decking board is the HDS system suitable for?

The installation tool is designed for fixing decking boards from 110 to 150 mm wide.

Can I use the HDS system with all types of wood?

The HDS system is designed for installing decking boards made of the following types of wood: pressure-treated pine, heartwood pine, larch, silicon-modified wood, oak, thermally modified wood, cedar and hardwoods such as teak and cumaru.

Important! Pre-drill hardwood boards before installation. If you install larch boards with the HDS tool, wash them after installation. Larch reacts with the metal the tool is made of and may become discoloured.

How do I fix the board next to the facade?

We recommend installing the first boards adjoining the building facade in the traditional way – with visible fixing using ESSDECK Max decking screws.

What should I keep in mind during installation?

  1. Hold the cordless screwdriver parallel to the deck surface so that the bits do not break while screwing.
  2. Do not press too hard when screwing. The tool itself ensures the correct angle and driving depth.
  3. If you are building a deck from larch boards, wash it thoroughly.
