Using construction adhesive: frequently asked questions
Questions and answers about ESSTACK adhesives
Which materials can you use the adhesive on? How quickly does it harden? We have summarised the most frequently asked questions and answers about our ESSTACK range of construction adhesives.
Can they be used for gluing both indoors and outdoors?
Yes, all ESSTACK products work both outdoors and indoors.
Like other hybrid products, they harden more slowly at low temperatures. For installation at sub-zero temperatures the best choice is ESSTACK Nordic Pro, which is easy to use and cures even at −15 °C.
Which materials are the adhesives suitable for?
You can use ESSTACK products on practically all materials except greasy plastics such as PP, PE or PTFE.
They work well on, for example, glass, ceramics, fibreglass, foam, metal, stone, wood, concrete, mirrors, plasterboard, polycarbonate, metals, fibre cement and natural stone.
Remember that ESSTACK Clear is not used on natural stone.
Can I paint over ESSTACK adhesive?
Yes, all ESSTACK products can be painted over.
What do I need to apply ESSTACK adhesive?
To apply ESSTACK products you need a caulking gun for 300 ml cartridges.
For ESSTACK Xtrm and ESSTACK Nordic Pro you will need our Tack Gun, because these adhesives are thicker and the gun must have a higher gear ratio.
For ESSTACK Easy and ESSTACK Clear we recommend our Skeleton caulking gun, but you can also use the Tack Gun mentioned above for both products.
We also recommend buying cleaning wipes to remove any mess.
What is the best way to apply the adhesive?
Apply the adhesive in wavy lines or in dots – not in a ring or over the whole surface.
ESSTACK products cure with moisture from the air, so they need access to moisture to cure fully. If you apply the adhesive in a ring or over the whole surface, there will be no moisture inside for it to react with. As a result, it will stay ‘tacky’ and uncured for a very long time.
How quickly do the adhesives cure?
The curing rate depends on the air humidity and the ambient temperature. At room temperature (23 °C and 50 % relative humidity), ESSTACK cures in 24 hours to a depth of 2 – 3.5 mm depending on the type: Clear at least 2 mm, Easy 2.5 mm, Xtrm 3 mm and Nordic Pro 3.5 mm (at 20 °C).
Put simply: the colder it is, the longer curing takes.
When can I load the joint?
All ESSTACK products grab firmly and immediately – whatever you glue stays in place straight away, provided its weight does not exceed the value stated on the product.
From the initial grab until full curing, the load-bearing capacity increases quickly and significantly.
How do I take apart a joint glued with ESSTACK adhesive?
Cured ESSTACK does not dissolve in solvents. The joint therefore has to be taken apart mechanically.
You can, for example, cut through the adhesive with a wire or a similar tool.
How do I remove adhesive from clothes and walls?
Until the adhesive has cured, you can remove it from a wall with ESSVE cleaning wipes or a cleaning spray. It is harder to remove from clothes, but here too we recommend carefully wiping it off with cleaning wipes.
Cured product must be removed mechanically – simply scrape it off.
What to do with the empty packaging? Can it be recycled?
Dispose of a completely emptied cartridge with cured adhesive residue according to the waste sorting rules in your municipality – if your municipality allows it, it belongs in the yellow plastics bin. Take a cartridge with uncured contents to a recycling centre. Information on transport and classification can be found in the product's safety data sheet.
