ESSDECK Max – the contractors' favourite screw

Build a deck with the contractors' favourite screw

Most contractors report a sharply rising demand for timber decks. That is why ESSVE decided to develop, together with contractors, a new screw for fixing decking boards that makes installation simpler and faster. The ESSDECK Max decking screw came onto the market in the 2020 season.

Meet Per Jansson...

Tell us about the project in which you used ESSDECK Max.

The deck on which we tested ESSDECK Max was just over 40 m², and we built it at a customer's house in Karlsborg, Sweden. The client wanted a deck with an attractive, exclusive look, so I suggested ESSDECK Max. It was recommended to me by colleagues in the trade. The reduced head, which looks better than traditional larger screw heads, and the high clamping force made it the natural and best choice for this project.

What do you think of these screws?

A very good screw. A small head with a neat result, no splinters or split wood around it and a very high clamping force.

Are you happy with the result?

We are very happy with both the installation and the final result. The best recommendation is the further jobs from this client that we will be doing in the spring.

The screw design guarantees a neat result

Per chose ESSDECK Max and mentioned several of its strengths. So what advantages do these screws actually bring? Below we go through them in detail for those who want to learn more about decking screws.

How does the shape of the screw head affect the result?

In the interview, Per mentions that the head is smaller than on traditional decking screws and that hardly any splinters form around it. Exactly! The head is more than 25 % smaller than on ordinary decking screws, so the deck looks better.

The head of the ESSDECK Max screw is cylindrical, which gives it a sharper edge. It is complemented by cutting mills that additionally mill the wood as the screw is driven in.

Why should decking screws pull the board down hard?

Quality wood is becoming ever more expensive. When we reach for a lower grade, the installation must still guarantee a firm fixing and the expected result.

What increases the clamping force of a screw?

To pull the board down optimally, the screw has an additional pull-down thread. ESSDECK Max has two threads with different pitches. The first, with the smaller pitch, is driven into the joist. The second pulls the board down further and increases the clamping force.

Tip!
For optimum clamping force, the unthreaded part of the screw should be exactly where the board rests on the joist.
