Replacing decking boards – a sustainable way to renew your deck
Replacing only the decking boards? Here's how!
Replacing damaged and rotten boards without touching the substructure is a sustainable way to renew a deck. We explain how to check whether the wood of the substructure is sound and how to proceed step by step.
1. Start by unscrewing the decking boards
Can the screws be removed? Do not use impact drivers to remove them. Another option is to cut through the boards between the joists and prise them off with a crowbar.
Caution!
Treated timber from demolition must not be burnt in stoves, fireplaces or on open fires. Take it to your municipal collection yard and point out that it is treated – depending on the type of preservative, it may be classified as hazardous waste.

2. Check the deck substructure
Once the boards have been removed, assess the condition of the load-bearing members of the deck. Keep the sound parts, and remove and replace the damaged ones.
Under the deck substructure
If the wood of the substructure is sound, check that its members are separated from the ground and from the deck foundations.
Tip!
Clear away rubble and anything that could prevent proper ventilation of the deck structure.
3. Is the substructure stable?
Check that the deck is level. If the substructure needs levelling and strengthening, you can fit cross braces between the joists.

4. Time to choose the wood
When choosing decking boards, never go by a low price alone. Deviations from the stated dimensions, lots of knots on the surface, or twisted and warped boards can quickly spoil the joy of a new deck.
Choose straight boards with few knots from reliable suppliers.
5. Install the decking boards correctly
Install a grooved board with the fine grooves facing up. Also look at the growth rings visible on the end of the board – if possible, lay the board heart side up. The board will then curve slightly upwards over time and water will run off it more easily.

6. Do not install without gaps!
Incorrect spacing between boards is the most common mistake when building a deck. It can have serious consequences, because wood swells and shrinks as the weather changes.
Always follow the Svenskt Trä recommendations – lay the boards with the correct gaps, whose size depends on the board width and the type of wood.
