Maintaining a wooden facade – how to extend the life of the wood

Maintaining a wooden facade

Look after the facade properly after installation. Simple maintenance rules will extend its service life by several years.

Draw up a maintenance plan for your wooden facade

Annual maintenance of a wooden facade:

  • After the winter, check the cladding – look out for cracks, deposits and damp patches.
  • Clean the surface with mild soap and water using a brush – do not use a pressure washer.

Maintenance every 5 – 10 years:

  • Repaint areas that are faded by the sun or cracked.
  • Check the board ends, the plinth and the joints particularly thoroughly.

More tips for a long service life:

  • Fit drip strips on exposed horizontal surfaces so that water runs off the cladding more easily.
  • Seal the board ends with lacquer or treat them with end-grain oil so that they absorb less moisture.
  • Avoid climbing plants on the facade – they retain moisture.
