Step by step – installing a window into wood

Installing a frame into wood

Step-by-step guide to installing with the Programa Plus frame screw into wood. A system that lets you install windows and doors easily and adjust them afterwards.

Installation guide

The video below shows you how to install a frame easily and correctly into wood using our Programa Plus frame screw system. If you prefer a step-by-step guide with text and pictures, read on below.

Before you start:
  • Choose the right frame screw length – see the table.
  • Install in accordance with Swedish standard SS 81 81 43, under which the number of fixing points is determined by the depth, width and height of the frame.
  • Space the frame screws approximately 500 mm apart.
  • Use the pre-drilled 14 mm diameter holes in the frame for the screws. No pre-drilled holes in the frame? Drill them with a drill bit for frame screws.
Gap width Screw length
0 – 5 mm 50 mm
5 – 15 mm 70 mm
15 – 35 mm 90 mm
35 – 85 mm 140 mm

Step 1 of the guide: fitting a level screw

Step 1: Fit the level screws

To make sure the frame is straight, fit ESSVE level screws in the bottom edge of the window opening. Place them as close to the edges as possible. Then stand the window on the level screws and use a spirit level to check that the frame is plumb. Adjust the height as needed with the adjustment key. Read more about fitting level screws here.

Step 2 of the guide: a Karmfix installation tool driven in on one side of the window

Step 2: Drive in the Karmfix installation tool

2. Drive the Karmfix installation tool into the pre-drilled 14 mm hole in the frame. Start with the bottom hole on the hinge side. Once the first tool is in, it is important to check that the frame is still plumb. Then drive a Karmfix tool into the top hole on the same side (the hinge side).

No pre-drilled holes in the frame? Drill them with a drill bit for frame screws. Drill from the outside of the frame – this reduces the risk of ugly holes on its inside.

Step 3 of the guide: Karmfix installation tools driven in on all sides of the window

Step 3: More Karmfix tools

Then drive in the Karmfix tools on the opposite side – first into the bottom hole, then into the top one. Keep checking with a spirit level that the frame is still plumb.

Step 4 of the guide: check that the window is centred

Step 4: Align the frame

When all the Karmfix tools are in place, move the frame so that it sits in the centre of the opening.

Step 5 of the guide: pull out the Karmfix tool by twisting it

Step 5: Twist

Remove the tool from the bottom hole on the hinge side (the one you started with) – twist it and pull it out. A centred hole has now been created in the middle of the 14 mm hole, and the frame screw is driven into it.

Step 6 of the guide: drive in the frame screw with the installation key in a cordless screwdriver

Step 6: Installation key

Fit the installation key into the cordless screwdriver and drive in the Programa Plus frame screw. Use the installation position of the key.

Step 7 of the guide: the picture shows what it should look like in the gap between the frame and the wall

Step 7: Drive in the frame screw

Drive the screw in far enough that its unthreaded part is visible in the gap between the wall and the frame (the green area in the picture).

Tip! Frame screws come in different lengths, so you can manage even when the gap around the window or door varies in width.

Step 8 of the guide: continue the installation following steps 6 and 7

Step 8: Complete the installation

Then continue with the top hole on the same side (the hinge side). Pull out the Karmfix tool and drive in the frame screw.

Step 9 of the guide: use a spirit level to check that the window is straight

Step 9: Set the vertical position

If necessary, fine-tune the frame – turn the installation key in the cordless screwdriver to the adjustment position. Use a spirit level to make sure the hinge side is perfectly plumb. Thanks to the Karmfix tools, the opposite side of the frame moves with it and will automatically be plumb too.

Step 10 of the guide: fit frame screws in all the pre-drilled holes

Step 10: Opposite side

Turn the installation key in the cordless screwdriver back to the installation position. Then fit the frame screws on the opposite side in the same way as on the first – first in the bottom hole, then in the top one.

Step 11 of the guide: the picture shows the method for larger windows and doors

Step 11: What about larger frames?

When installing door frames or larger window frames: once you have fitted the outermost screws on both sides, continue with the holes in the middle of the frame. As the frame is already firmly in place, you can work one hole at a time. Drive in a Karmfix tool to centre the hole relative to the wall or stud, twist it and pull it out, and drive in the frame screw.

Step 12 of the guide: cover caps being fitted over the screw holes in the frame

Step 12: Cover caps

Cover all the holes with cover caps. The cover caps come in several colours, and you can match the colour to the frame so that the fixing is discreet.

Remember! Depending on the season, the timber in the frame, stud or wall may swell or shrink. The installation may then need fine adjustment. Remove the cover caps and realign the frame using the installation key in the adjustment position.

Step 13 of the guide: fill the gap between the frame and the wall

Step 13: Insulate the gap

Fill the gap between the wall and the frame with gun foam. We recommend Expand gun foam, with an isocyanate content below 0.1%, which provides good sound damping and thermal insulation. It adheres to most materials, e.g. wood, metal, concrete, stone, foam plastics and extruded polystyrene.

Isocyanates – mandatory training!

Because working with isocyanates carries a risk of allergy, since 24/8/2023 anyone who works industrially or professionally with products containing 0.1% or more diisocyanates by weight, or who supervises such work, must complete training. The obligation arises from Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/1149 (REACH, Annex XVII, entry 74). More about isocyanates and mandatory training

Did you know...

... that the frame screw was invented in the early 1970s by a carpenter from Karlskrona? ESSVE bought the patent, and until 1989 we were the only manufacturer of this product.
